Elementary & Middle School Academics at Salem

Rigorous academics. Two-grade classrooms. A Christ-centered foundation where every student is known, challenged, and prepared.

Academic Excellence with Purpose

At Salem Lutheran School, education is more than test scores and grade levels. We develop the whole child—spiritually, academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. Every subject is taught through a Christ-centered lens, connecting learning to purpose and meaning.

Our students work hard—not for trophies, but to honor the One who gave them their gifts. Mediocrity is not an option. From 1st grade through 8th, every student receives instruction that builds toward high school readiness and beyond.

Our Curriculum

All courses are aligned with state or national standards and taught with the conviction that all truth is God’s truth. We build strong thinkers, clear communicators, and faithful learners.

Word of God

Daily devotions, religion class, chapel, memory work, and catechism instruction in grades 7–8. Students grow in faith and learn to apply Scripture to their lives.

Mathematics

Concepts, critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. Strong mathematical foundations that equip students for advanced work in high school.

Social Studies

History, geography, civics, and current events. Students learn how God created, sustains, and preserves the world—and their place in it.

Art

Creative expression through a variety of media. Students develop an eye for beauty and learn to appreciate God’s creation through their own work.

Language Arts

Reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, phonics, speech, and communication. Students learn to use language effectively and express ideas clearly.

Science

Life science, earth science, and physical science. Students recognize God’s design in creation through observation, inquiry, and hands-on exploration.

Music

Understanding and appreciation for sacred and secular music. Students use their gifts to praise God and develop confidence through performance.

Physical Education

Fitness, coordination, sportsmanship, and responsibility. Students learn to appreciate their bodies as gifts from God.

Technology skills are integrated into regular classroom instruction across all grade levels. Students learn responsible, effective use of digital tools as part of their everyday learning.

Two-Grade Classrooms — Our Approach

Salem intentionally groups students across two adjacent grade levels. This research-backed model is used in high-performing private schools and Montessori programs nationwide. It produces equal or better academic outcomes, stronger social development, and greater student confidence.

Students work at their actual level.

Not a grade label. Advanced learners stretch. Students needing support receive it without stigma.

Older students become leaders.

Mentoring younger peers reinforces learning and builds real responsibility.

Younger students rise faster.

Daily exposure to older peers and advanced expectations accelerates growth.

Teachers know students deeply.

Two years with the same teacher means truly personalized instruction.

Community over competition.

The classroom feels like a team, not just a group passing through.

How We Measure Growth

FastBridge Assessment

Students take the FastBridge Assessment up to three times per year in math and reading. Results help teachers track individual growth, adjust instruction, and plan curriculum.

Beyond formal testing, teachers communicate with parents regularly. If something is off, we do not wait for a scheduled conference to let you know.

Beyond Academics

A strong education goes further than the classroom. Salem students are encouraged to participate in athletics, fine arts, and service—not just watch from the sidelines.
